A handsome and talented Great Horned Owl intently keeps a keen eye on the shared nest with young fledglings to feed around the clock.
Owl the savvy hunter he is, resources the saguaro cactus to keep a protective vigilance on the nest while using 360' turn radius to hunt from the vantage point.
The rare occasion of a fully bloomed saguaro may happen but just once a year. In very fortunate timing the male is perched on the cactus long enough to snap the capture in soft daylight of the sunrise.
Owl is a wild owl and not a capture or rescued owl; but the head of the new owl family out west, where their future is guaranteed by the other families in the owl network.

The Spanish Catholic Mission site was founded in 1692, the original mission was burned to the ground in 1770 by Apache Raiders. The current mission was constructed in 1793 as it stands today. It is known as The White Dove of the Desert. This was the cultural center of the region; here locals received the Word of God, traded goods and celebrated events of significant occasion in and around the mission.

A cluster of freshly opened Saguaro Cactus Flowers gather together as part of natures survival of the species.
The previous winter and early spring the desert received abundant rainfall increasing the visibility of the flowers this time around.
The density of the cluster supports greater chances of seed dispersal and cacti survival in the harsh climate.

A completed Petroglyph reveals a story of early mankind in North America.
The Petroglyph rests under a naturally formed cave remnant of the last Great Ice Age created by expanding and contracting ice movements.
The overhang above the cave is about twenty five feet up above the cave entrance and is believed to be by the Hopi Peoples dated 850 A.D.

A Serpent - evil sprit has entered the canyon community, snakes where beheaded and eaten as protein and the skins dried for ceremonial applications and medicine.
A Kokopelli - plays a pan flue to keep the people in balance
J - although not a letter in a language, the inscription is the symbol of the Hopi People, a hooked semi loop.
The Frog - represents the authority and presence of the Tribal Medicine Man, anphibions and reptiles where used in the medicine of the ancient ones.
The Hand Prints - are a key to identification with the spirits in the cave, each set of hand prints made by a Chieftain, Medicine Man and a Tribe Elder of the deceased have access to the cave, it is a sacred place to present the dead.
Only the Medicine Man, Chieftain and Family Elder have access to the sacred cave interior.
The Puffs - are depictions of ghosts, spiritual but on earth as made by the winds and the clouds. Rain was the most important spirit for the Hopi.
Human Figure - the image depicts a human with the head extended well above the shoulders, the extended head is a body of the deceased, still on the earth but the spirit has left the body.

A single cholla flower opens in the soft filtered morning light under a desert mesquite tree.
In the bloom, the silhouette of a vailed woman appears to be in prayer, her image captured on the pedals of the cactus flower cup.
And the silhouette spoke, like the voice of a woman in the wilderness; a whispering of wind, a rustling in the trees; like an angel, like a birds morning song, she appears, speaks and returns to the spiritual world without end.

Grand Canyon a kaleidoscope of color and texture.
The earths crust, torn apart by the forces of nature opens like a book, revealing all the layers from the Coconino to the bottom and the Colorado River. The canyon is estimated to be in the seventy seven million years old range at the basin and the top layer with the gold and amber coloring was formed by oceanic deposits from over two million years. The Coconino top layer supports life as ponderosa pine seeds mature into trees growing in-between the massive rock formation.

Paleo Mankind’s home in post Ice Age North America, humans sought shelter in naturally formed caves.

The Pueblo Ruins sit in silence, only time passes through the deep and narrow canyon today.
The spirits of the dead inhabit this place, as this was the battle site of the Massacre at Mummy Cave.
Navajo Nation was encamped in the Canyon during 1864. The U.S. Calvary was dispatched to end the conflict between the U.S. Army and the Navajo. The Calvary Massacred 11 Navajo at the Mummy Cave leaving behind only the Pueblo Ruins.
The desecration of the sight remains a tragedy, 2,500 years of peaceful inhabitance in the canyon ended with death & destruction.

Sweet Dreams Little One
A young Great Horned Owl named Luca, probably about three weeks old or so lowers his eyelids as the daylight fades into evening dusk.
Luca is developing quickly into a big strong owl, already sporting colored feathers on his face at about 10 days of age.
Luca later in life became a foot soldier in the Family as the deliverer of bad news.
And in a twist of fate, Luca Brasi now sleeps with the fishes.

A great horned owl "One Eyed Pauli" and the brood prepare for night training.
Into the darkest of hours the little ones will learn to use their razor sharpe talons to hop about the arms of the saguaro around the nest, before learning how to use their beaks to kill their first victim.
One Eyed Pauli gives last minute instructions too Little Pauli and Sammy the fledgling next door.
Later in life, Sammy takes the stand against the family and all hell breaks loose.

Montezuma's Castle
The Cliff Dwelling and Pueblo Ruins at Montezuma Castle where built into a section of sandstone overlooking the Verde River Valley. The sculpture by removal and early adobe brick laying has been preserved by the sheet rock overhang and the dry climate of the past millennia.
Built 1250 A.D. by the Senegua Tribe who inhabited the lands in the Verde River Valley; the hunter gatherer tribe planted and stored crops in sealed stash houses in the desert foothills above the valley. They where defending their food supply when they vanished to the east following years of drought.

Owl Capone is the oldest sibling in the brood of fledging great horned owls in a saguaro cactus nest. He uses his beak to make a clacking sound, anticipating something fresh and delicious for breakfast, perhaps a rat.
Owl Capone resided in Federal Prison at Alcatraz with the other Jail Birds, his psychiatrist diagnosed him to have the brain of a twelve year old.
Owl, also know as Scarface, Big Owl, Owl Boy, Public Owl Enemy #1; became an American Icon as a Bootlegger, Gangster and Racketeer in Old Chicago Town.

The Pueblo’s where built around 850 A.D. by the Hopi, a small tribe of hunter gathers.
The Hopi people connected with the spirits in the canyon leaving behind unique petroglyphs messages on cave walls detailing the life and survival of the early Native American Inhabitants.

A Great Horned Owl Mama Mia’ protects her chicks with the bow of her enormous wing span, keeping them safe from nasty aggressive predators as Black Crows, Ravens, Roadrunners and Reptiles.
The nest, built into the folded arms of a Majestic Saguaro Cacti provide a natural barrier to deter predation.
Her eyes reflect the amazing sunset she is looking into, as the tapetum lucidum layer in the retina catch the rays of the setting sun.
Owls eyes are much more sensitive in low light than human vision in minimal light.

Artist Note: I do not use drones to take the photographs as they are intrusive and very unappreciated by nesting birds.
However I do resource a six foot painters ladder that is carefully positioned not to disturb but to view. No owls or chicks have been harmed in the process.
In the Hebrew tradition of the time Ecclesiastes was written, men embraced each other by wrapping their arms around each other as a greeting and sign of friendship.
The word embrace is also used in the context of embracing the scripture, the written word as a symbol or act pleasing to God and recognizable by other worthy men.
A Time to Refrain from Embrace would be avoiding some one out of anger or jealousy, or presenting false witness as friendship, not pleasing to God and easily recognizable by worthy men.

Painted Horses where preferred by Native American Warriors for their distinguished coloration, believed to be spiritual they provided a fierce appearance in battle, already painted by nature.
The War Painted Horse was a source of energy that Native Warriors rode into battle in full regalia.
The Babylonians domesticated horses, using them in their powerful military calvary about 2,200 B.C. described in stone carvings in modern day Iran and Iraq.
Equestrian Therapy has brought those with disabilities of all natures closer to self consciousness, happiness and joyful lessons.

Although Little Joey is only a few days from hatching out, he is already smart enough to keep a low profile.
Joey would fledge in the wild living in the hallow of a saguaro cactus, learning the survival skills from wise owls.
Not Wise Guys.

He is family loyal to a fault, but can clearly see that not all family is good family. The envious underachievers resent Joey and his track to success using non-traditional methods beyond family intellect and scope. They ooze with jealousy and their venom is poison liken a Rattlesnake with keys to the front door.
Joey Zaza knows you can’t live in a sleepy little hallow his whole life? I guess that would be going nowhere.
Joey took wing and few west into the sunshine, making his mark, starring in Godfather lll where he put his signature on the life saga of survival of the fittest.
If you set the bar to easy street, you get what you deserve.

Joey Zaza is now a wise old owl, retired at his secured complex in Troon Golf Village, Scottsdale Arizona with swimming pools, movie stars and mountain views.
